TW#3.1: Don’t Call it a Comeback

{www.youtube.com/watch?v=29Dy2Mn12Yr&A}

[The website pops up on the screen in front of you, the title of the video you’re about to watch written in big bold letters; “Don’t Call it a Comeback”. Under that is a large black rectangle with a circular design spinning around the middle, an indicator that the video is loading and almost ready to play. To the right is a series of “suggestions”; links to other videos of wrestlers spilling their guts to their loyal viewers, promoting whatever match it is they have this week. But you’re not here for them; you’re here for the man whose face has just faded up in front of you.]

My name is Tim Worthington and I’m a wrestle-holic.

[The man smiles cheekily at the camera as it pulls back to reveal him stood in a wrestling ring in an empty sports hall. He’s smartly dressed in his shiny black shoes, smart grey suit, swish blue tie and sharp white shirt. He’s leaning up against the turnbuckle and looks around the room with pensive eyes.]

It’s been almost a decade since I did anything meaningful in the wrestling world. In the late nineties my career took off so fast and I reached the top at a young age. I toured the world, I wrestled in the biggest stadia, and I won World Titles. But I plateaued. I got stale. I fell. I continued to try and climb back to the top only to fall further. Eventually I stopped trying and I left the wrestling business behind.

But I’m still only thirty two years old; I have plenty of good years left in me yet. And despite a little ring rust which I’m currently blowing away there’s still a lot left in the Worthington tank. And there’s going to have to be if I’m going to stand a chance of becoming the first ever Premier UK Champion.

[He pats the top turnbuckle pad before stepping out into the middle of the ring.]

Premier is a new dawn in British wrestling. And here I am at the very start of it, the very heart of it. I have to tell you I’m excited. I’m excited by the new opponents I’m set to face, by the fact I’ll be performing regularly in front of my fellow countrymen for the first time in a long time, and the chance to get my career back on track is just the icing on the cake.

So what or who stands in my way of me establishing myself as the top dog in Premier Wrestling? “The Moral Dilemma” J. Summers. Davy Thatcher. Some random guy no one knows about.

Summers, Thatcher, you’re talented kids. I’ve seen some videos online of you both and there’s no doubting you have some talent. My main problem with you may be just keeping up. I’m not as quick or as agile as I used to be but where my card trumps yours is experience; and it’s that experience that I aim to use to my advantage when we meet here in Birmingham.

[Worthington’s voice switches to a more deliberately gruff and condescending tone.]

I’ve been in more wrestling matches than you’ve had hot dinners. I’ve forgotten more wrestling holds than you’ll ever learn…

[And now it switches back to normal.]

And other such stereotypical nonsense.

No, I’m not going to come out here and claim to be the greatest wrestler the world has ever seen. I’m not calling myself the saviour of British wrestling. I’m not going to tell you all how easily I’m going to brush you aside like crumbs on a table. But I am confident. Confident that my experience, my understanding of technical wrestling and my resilience will see me through whatever Premier Wrestling has to throw at me.

Win, lose or draw I’m always going to keep bouncing back. I’m always going to keep on fighting, never giving up. It’s just the way I am.

So, Thatcher, Summers. Whatever you got, make it good. You’re only going to get one shot at becoming the first ever UK Champion. One chance to etch your name in the Premier record books forever. And that chance starts right here in Birmingham this Monday night.

By the way, random guy, whoever you are; I mean you no disrespect by glossing over your participation in this match. But when you don’t know who you’re up against what’s the point in worrying about it? What’s the point planning for all the possible outcomes? You just go with the flow. I may not know who you are but I know your quality, because if you’ve gotten a place with Premier you HAVE to be good.

Or in the case of Summers you just have to know someone who’s good.

[Tim shoots a cheeky smile towards the camera before walking over to the ropes on the left side of your screen.]

I jest of course. Zak Phenom is not good!

[He smiles again and shakes his head a little.]

In all seriousness, I’m making my return to British wrestling this Monday night and I’m primed and ready to go. It’s been a long time coming and I’m glad that this moment is here. But this is no come back; this is no re-birth for me. This is just another chapter in an already storied career.

And I’m going to make sure it’s the best damn chapter yet!

[The screen fades to black as the video ends. You’re met with the option to replay or share, then take a quick look at the most recent comments on the page.]
