The screen is black. There is the sound of crashing waves and seagulls squawking. A strong wind can be heard whistling away in the background and there’s the increasing sound of footsteps on shingle. Finally the footsteps stop and the picture fades up to reveal an empty beach on a cold looking grey day.
There’s a man stood looking out at the sea, towards an island in the distance, barely visible through the mist. His back is to the camera as we look out on the scene over his shoulder. His coat collar is up and a scarf is wrapped tightly around his neck, keeping out the chill.
“They say you should never go back.”
The screen cuts to black again and the sound stops dead. After a brief moment there is a new sound, that of a busy city. Cars driving past, people walking and talking and an underlying sound of steam and ticking which is barely audible behind the noise of gentle rainfall.
As the picture fades up we see another man in front of us, again with his back to the camera. His long coat is keeping him dry as he looks down the street towards the ocean. There’s an island out there somewhere, not that he can see it through the rain.
“They say you should never meet your hero.”
Again the screen cuts to black and the noise turns to silence.
“They also say… never say never.”
